Our Story

Floaters is a beloved Fair booth rooted in community, creativity, and a deep love for the West Tisbury Agricultural Fair. Founded in 2009 by island locals Adam Petkus, Evan Hammond, Todd Hitchings, and Mike Shea, the business has grown from a simple idea into a cherished tradition.

Adam, Evan, and Todd have been part of the Fair since childhood—starting at age ten as “Fair trash kids” managing the recycling and compost stations. Years later, as Adam prepared to return to college, his father, Ken Petkus, suggested he open a root beer float stand to make some extra money. With a few friends on board and a bit of island resourcefulness, Floaters was born.

The booth’s first big evolution came with the creation of the Espresso Float—Adam’s answer to the morning crowd who weren’t quite ready for root beer. Inspired by affogato and fueled by second-hand coffee machines from the Dumptique, the team served espresso over vanilla ice cream, creating a Fair favorite with a unique twist.

As the Floaters crew grew more serious about flavor and sourcing, they upgraded to a professional espresso setup and began using locally roasted Chilmark Coffee Company beans. With each pour, they serve not just a treat, but a taste of the island’s vibrant food culture.

Today, Floaters is a collaboration of local families dedicated to serving up delicious, playful, and thoughtfully sourced fair fare. With roots in friendship and a passion for the community, the Floaters booth has become a joyful and flavorful part of the West Tisbury Fair experience.
